The inmate was transferred to the hospital after doctors at the Welikada prison hospital failed to retrieve the mobile phone. The doctors at the prison had tried to remove the mobile phone which had unfortunately gone way too far in the rectum.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspect who was produced in court over a drug offense had been handed over a mobile phone prior to his return to the prison, which he had hidden in his rectum. The mobile phone was snuck into the prison premises by the inmate to maintain contacts with outsiders and to command his other drug smuggling activities.
The inmate had been initially admitted to the Welikada prison hospital after he had shown severe discomfort and was later transported to the Colombo National Hospital.
