The exact iPhone 12 release date is a confusing topic; nothing has been made official yet, but we’re almost certain Apple will be unveiling its new iPhones before the end of 2020. At least one tipster has said the big day will be September 8, which means Apple is more on schedule than we thought
One of the latest reports on the matter, which comes from “multiple suppliers in China”, suggests that the iPhone 12 range won’t be announced until late October, with the 4G models hitting stores shortly after, while the 5G iPhone 12 models won’t go on sale until November.
The iPhone 12 range will most probably be released by the end of September or early October. As per rumors the release of Apple’s new product lineup is supposed to be in two segments. The release might even be delayed based on the Covid-19 pandemic and its spread.
The iPhone 12 will possess a slab-sided design that reminisces the old iPhone 4. Online apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has leaked that the iPhone 12 will have curved glass edges around the display, like the iPhone 11. Apple’s bold move to bring back the bold slab based design is supposedly said to be well received by users. Hence the reason Apple decided to make the switch.
The images below show what the iPhone 12 may look.
Famous Youtuber MKBHD in his recent video has portrayed a clear image of what the iPhone 12 will actually look like.
A major feature in the all-new iPhones is the use of OLED display technology. LG and Samsung will be the main suppliers of the OLED panels for Apples new iPhones to be released this year.
The four rumoured iPhones will have three different display sizes. All displays will feature curved glass edges. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has stressed that 2/2.5D glass that will feature in all 4 iPhone 12 handsets. The four display sizes for the four iPhone 12 handsets will be as follows:
- iPhone 12 with a 5.4-inch display
- iPhone 12 Max with a 6.1-inch display
- iPhone 12 Pro with a 6.1-inch display
- iPhone 12 Pro Max with a 6.7-inch display
Based on information by www.macrumors.com. Samsung will supply most of the displays for three models which is the 5.4-inch entry-level iPhone 12 and 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch. It is reported that LG will be supplying 20 million OLED panels which will be only for the low-end 6.1-inch model which is the iPhone 12 Max.
One of the notable additions by Apple is rumoured to be the 120Hz refresh rate promotion displays when compared to the 60Hz refresh rate displays used by Apple up to date. This feature will enhance user experience and better responsiveness to gestures.
The camera technology will be a key difference between the 4 iPhone 12 variants. The lower end devices which do not have the term ‘pro’ will have a dual-lens technology as seen in the iPhone 11. The ‘pro’ devices will have a three-lens technology. The three lens technology is for wide, ultra-wide and telephoto. Certain leaked images show a fourth lens in the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro max versions.
This fourth lens-like structure seen in leaked images is rumoured to be a LiDAR scanner. Based on several sources the LiDAR scanner is key in bringing improvements to AR capabilities. The LiDAR will most probably be an addition to the new iPhone 12 as Apple have made an official statement (https://developer.apple.com/ios/) that a brand new developed AR application will be introduced by iOS14
Several sources Apple analysts have also revealed that the Pro versions will accommodate a time-of-flight sensor. This addition will enable high-quality 3D photo captures which will be hugely beneficial for AR purposes. iOS14’s new AR app will greatly benefit these new features such as the LiDAR scanner and the ToF sensors.
Power and processing
The latest range of iPhones will boast Apple’s next generation of A-series processors which will most probably be called the A14. The A14 processor will accommodate a 5-nanometer processor compared to the A13’s 7nm.
The rumored 6GB ram plus the A14 processor will match the performance of the 15 inch MacBook pro.
5G and connectivity
The biggest flex for the entire range of iPhone 12 is that all four handsets will feature 5G connectivity.
Apple is still in the process of developing their very own 5G modems. Qualcomm is reported to be featuring their 5g modems in the all-new iPhone 12 range of handsets.
Should I buy the iPhone 11 or wait for the 12?
The iPhone 12 release date is still a couple of months away even if the September 2020 launch window stays constant, so you should probably consider the iPhone 11 series if you need a new iPhone in the next few days, weeks or even months.
But if you want to enjoy the features of iOS14 to the best of their ability be patient and get the iPhone 12 !!
